Silobreaker: Cable havoc leaves Egypt and India off the Web
Two separate incidents on undersea cable networks led to the disruption of up to 70% of Internet services in Egypt and India on Wednesday, affecting businesses and financial transactions.
From quickly browsing the stories aggregated at Silobreaker, it sounds like it was a rogue ship’s anchor that disabled the cable.
It does remind us, however, that there really is some “there there” where the Internet is concerned–physical infrastructure that, if disrupted, damaged, or destroyed, can have a big impact. This time the incident seems to have been an accident. But what are the possibilities for something like this being carried out intentionally by either state or nonstate actors?
