Russia said on Friday it had uncovered a plot by foreign spy agencies to sow chaos in Russia’s banking system via a coordinated wave of cyber attacks and fake social media reports about banks going bust.

The statement did not say which countries’ intelligence agencies were behind the alleged plot.

Vice President Biden made statements in October about possible U.S. cyber reprisals for supposed Russian cyber meddling in the U.S. presidential election. Reuters reports that there is already suspicion that the U.S. might be involved.

Even if the U.S. isn’t involved, Biden’s statements allow Putin and others to see an American cyber-bogeyman behind every incident.
